Holiday Walks for Cyprus.

Cedar Valley, Akamas, Troodos Mountains, Aphrodite Trail, Smigies Trail, Adonis Trail and Avakas Gorge Cyprus Hiking.

Cyprus is an excellent Island for doing some walks whilst on holiday - with quite often the opportunity to visit and enjoy some of the Cypru's great beaches too during the walks. We have created instructions with lots of descriptive pictures for quite a few walks - these are summarised below. Whilst out walking we found that having a decent hat, good walking boots as well as plenty of water with you was essential - for instance out on the Akamas Peninsula or in the Troodos Mountains there are not exactly a lot of cafes etc. around and the areas are quite exposed. One of the walks described below is via a gorge - it should be remembered that rock fall is always a possibility when gorge-walking. Also of course a carefull note of weather conditions should be taken i.e. recent rain can make a gorge such as the Avakas fill up dangerously with fast deep water and debris in no time. Finally it does no harm to tell someone about where you intend to be walking.

Cedar Valley - Tripylos 13.5km. This fairly easy walk is quite straightforward and gives great views along the way particularly of the Cedar trees which are magnificent.

Miliou via Theletra circular. 10kms. This is actually quite a strenuous walk despite it's relatively short distance - sometimes dusty tracks, a couple of steep climbs and in places some confusing joining tracks.

Avakas Gorge - 14km. Marvellous and really scenic walk up through this rugged Cyprus gorge - movement can be quite difficult in places because of the sometimes massive rocks in the way. As already mentioned check the weather conditions before attempting this wet gorge. We did it as a circular as we continued on at the end of the gorge to return via tracks - take plenty of water with you if you do this - else of course simply walk back down the gorge.

Aphrodite Trail - 8km.  This is a circular walk on one of Cyprus's most famous trails - the walk involves a steep winding climb and sometimes slippery underfoot descent - there are marvellous views to be enjoyed. The total climb is approximately 350 metres.

Akamas Peninsula - 20kms. Starting from the Baths of Aphrodite it goes out to Cape Arnaoutis (Akamas). The walk involves a long climb up to the top ridge before a descent back to the Baths. No facilities out on the Cape - take plenty of water and sunhat etc.

Aphrodite-Smigies-Adonis Trails. This 16.5km circular walk creates a double loop by using parts of all three of these famous Cyprus Trails. Difficulty is Hard to Strenuous - total climb of approximately  680 metres.

Troodos - Mount Olympos - Troodos. A circular walk starting at the Atalante Naure trail this is very easy to follow hike which uses paths and follows stream beds as it loops through pine forests. Quite a popular route for mountain bikers too.

Trooditissa - Prodhromos - Trooditissa. At 20km this figure of eight walk can be considered as strenuous but only because of it's distance - especially if the wather is hot. The undulating walk creates a figure of 8 and only has one short steep climb - note there are drinks facilities at Prodhromos.

Platres - Pouziaris - Troodos - Platres. This 17.5km path and track circular walk has a bit of a climb of around 600 metres at the start but then becomes far easier.
